The following post includes some relevant discussion about keyword research in general but the review of Keyword Strategy can be ignored as the tool was withdrawn in March of 2013.

 As a substitute I can highly recommend the Google keyword research tool (Google Keyword Planner) and Spencer Haw’s Long Tail Pro tool.
